INEC-Voters Register Crucial
Voter registration is crucial for political participation in a democratic context. Theremust be a guarantee that the right to vote in elections is universal, equal, direct and secret. The franchise is the means through which the governed agree to delegate their authority to those who govern. It is the link between the legitimacy of political governance and the liberty of human beings. The Commission is mandated by law in Section 9(1) of the Electoral Act 2010 to keep the voter register updated and this would be done via the Continuous register. Continuous Registration is the process whereby the Voters` List is continually maintained by adding the names of eligible voters as well as deleting the names of those who no longer meet eligibility requirements. It would enable citizens register at any time other than the election period especially for those who had not attained the voting age during the biometricvoter`s registration exercise, it is also necessary if a registered voter needs to update his/her information for instance contact address or details.
